چکیده

Culiseta inornata females, provided with sucrose and deprived of blood, laid a mean of 30.2 +/- 0.9 eggs in the first gonotrophic cycle. Twenty-three percent of these eggs hatched and developed to pupae. Females that were bloodfed after the first cycle completed an additional 1-4 cycles.

The host preferences of Culiseta inornata in southwestern Manitoba.

The capillary tube precipitin test was used to determine the host utilization patterns of Culiseta inornata in southwestern Manitoba. Ruminant blood was identified in 83.3% and equine blood in 15.8% of 1,036 positively reacting blood-meals. Human, swine and avian blood accounted for 0.9% of these blood-meals and mixed blood-meals accounted for 1.5% of the total. Culiseta inornata preferentially...

The pattern of osmotic regulation in larvae of the mosquito Culiseta inornata.

Larvae of Culiseta inornata (Williston) can survive and complete development in dilutions of sea water ranging from 50-700 mosmol kg-1. The larvae hyperregulate with regard to haemolymph osmotic concentration in dilute media (50-400 mosmol kg-1) and osmoconform when external salinities exceed 400 mosmol kg-1. This pattern of osmoregulation is distinct from that observed in freshwater and saline...

Structure and seasonality of nearctic Culex pipiens populations.

The abundance and structure of urban autogenous and anautogenous populations of Culex pipiens mosquitoes were documented systematically in Boston, MA, during three successive years. Autogenous larvae become abundant mainly in enclosed sites and anautogenous larvae in sites that provide free access and egress. Both populations begin to proliferate when the water temperature exceeds 15 degrees C ...

Biological differences reflect host preference in two parasitoids attacking the bark beetle Ips typographus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) in Belgium.

The basic reproductive biology of two ectoparasitoids developing on the late larval instars of the scolytid Ips typographus Linnaeus, a pest of spruce forests in Eurasia, was studied with the purpose of explaining which biological features allow the two species to share the same host. The anautogenous braconid Coeloides bostrichorum Giraud had a longer pre-oviposition period (5.1 vs. 3.3 days),...

Laboratory Transmission of Western Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus by Mosquitoes of the Genera Culex and Culiseta

1. Western equine virus has been successfully transmitted in the laboratory by 3 species of mosquitoes from 2 genera not previously reported as laboratory vectors: Culex tarsalis, Culiseta inornata, and Culiseta incidens. 2. Though transmission was not demonstrated, survival of the virus for more than a few days was shown to occur in Culex stigmatosoma and Psorophora confinnis. Possibly transmi...
